Tournament Rules

Registration for the 2019 Feminine Empowerment Movement Slam Tournament is open from August 5th through September 27th. The first 16 teams and the first 8 individual poets to complete the registration form and pay their required fee will be guaranteed a spot in the competition.

All poems must be the original work(s) of the performer(s). Neither teams nor individual poets are permitted to repeat poems at any point during the tournament. The use of musical instruments, pre-recorded music, costumes, and props is prohibited and may result in team or individual disqualification depending upon the circumstances. All competitors are expected to be present at their assigned venues thirty (30) minutes prior to their bout’s projected start time so that the bout manager may conduct the first round’s random draw in a timely manner.

Five (5) judges will be randomly selected by the bout manager in both preliminary and finals bouts. Each judge will be asked if they have any affiliation with the competitors and all poets will be given the opportunity to approve the judging panel before the start of the bout. The judges will give each poem a score from 0.0 to 10.0 (10.0 being the highest possible score). Each poem’s highest and the lowest scores will be dropped, and the remaining three (3) scores will be added together to produce the poem’s final score. If only three (3) judges are selected by the bout manager, all three (3) scores will be added to produce the poem’s final score. All bouts will be scored cumulatively.

There will be four (4) preliminary bouts, each containing four (4) teams and two (2) individual poets. Each registered team is guaranteed a single four (4) round preliminary bout, while each registered individual poet is guaranteed a single two (2) round preliminary bout. The top four highest scoring teams and the top four highest scoring individual poets at the conclusion of all preliminary bouts will advance to finals; ties will not be broken. The competitors in each preliminary bout will perform in the following order:

Round 1: Team A, B, C, D

                        Indie Poet 1

Round 2: Team B, C, D, A

                        Indie Poet 2

Round 3: Team C, D, A, B

Preliminary Bout 2 will begin at 12 PM EST in the Fellowship Hall at Friends Meeting in Cambridge; Preliminary Bout 4 will begin at 3 PM in the same location.

Should any poem performed in any preliminary bout exceed three minutes and ten seconds (3:10), 1/10 of a point will be deducted from the poem’s final score for every second the poet goes over time.

The finals program will be divided into two (2) separate competitions: the individual finals and the team finals. Advancing teams will compete in a single four (4) round finals bout, while advancing individual poets will compete in a single three (3) round finals bout. The highest scoring team and the highest scoring individual poet at the conclusion of their respective finals bouts will be crowned the 2019 Feminine Empowerment Movement Slam Tournament Champions.
